According to tradition, Reprobus was an exceedingly large man who desired to serve the mightiest king on earth. Through a chain of events, he came to realize that the king he was seeking was Christ—and, while helping travelers cross a perilous river, he unknowingly transported Christ Himself, who gave him the new name “Christopher” (meaning “Christ-bearer”). He was later beheaded for refusing to worship the emperor of Lycia.
